Relaxation Staycation – The Spa at Ye Olde Bell Review

When we booked a stay at Ye Olde Bell Hotel, we knew they had a spa. However, we were not prepared for just what a wonder their spa was. Come with us for a relaxing staycation in our Spa at Ye Olde Bell review.

Check out our full review of our stay at Ye Olde Bell Hotel

We were hosted by the Spa at Ye Olde Bell but all opinions are entirely our own.

    Arrival

After a bit of a mix up (we totally misunderstood where we were meant to be having lunch) we found ourselves dashing into the spa 15 minutes late. We had happily plonked ourselves into the restaurant in the main Ye Olde Bell hotel before the poor wait staff had to inform us that we were meant to be eating at the Spa.

We ran in, feeling all flustered, and were introduced to a lovely gentleman called Jerry. He settled us into some chairs in the lobby and helped us order a calming beverage.

    Lunch

Lunch is served in a nice little restaurant. It is bright and airy, with a semi open kitchen. Guests can choose to eat inside or take a table outside in the sunshine.

The lunch menu is split into three sections. You have the light options, the heartier choices and the indulgent selections. I knew that fitting into a swimming costume meant picking smaller choices, BUT how is anyone meant to skip a tasty croquette! I opted for two courses whilst Mr Fluskey had three. Everything was prepared beautifully and the flavours packed a decent punch. Of particular note was the absolutely perfect salmon cooking and the desserts which were divine!

I could have happily eaten another round of dessert, allowing us to try all of them but it was time to spa!

    A Look Around the Spa

We were given a small tour around the main spa facilities. The lovely host, Jerry explained how each section worked and what was on offer. We could slurp as much tea, coffee and ice water as we liked but other drinks were chargeable. I made good use of the tea station throughout the experience, before ending the day with an Aperol Spritz in the pool.

Around the pool were some rather novel seating areas. You’ll find sunbeds sure, but there is also a very snuggly rattan pod.

Follow around the corner and you’ll find a collection of Alpine Lodge seating areas. These are perfect for hen-dos or family gatherings and they are a great sun trap for a glass of wine.

We made a beeline for a large day bed inside (it was just a couple of degrees too cold to be outside for my lizard liking) and after depositing our robes and towels, head straight for the pool.

    A Lubbly, Bubbly Pool

The pool starts inside and has an opening to the outside area. It is not a pool for swimming; you wouldn’t get very far. Around the edge are a variety of hydrotherapy structures. Press the button and watch the bubbles ascend from the metal bars. They did your back, your bottom, your legs or just a pleasant bubble to relax in. There was even a fountain for massaging the shoulders but I was trying to avoid getting soaking wet straight away so this was saved until later.

    Thermotherapy Time

After being bubble blasted for a little while, we were ready to make our way through the thermotherapy rooms.

    Herbal Laconium

This room was kept at a very pleasing temperature when sat in swimwear. It was like a hot day in the sun, but the air wasn’t too dry and the fragrance of the lavender/herb bags was just enough to notice every so often. At first, we took the high, lifeguard style chairs but realised we fancied slumping to relax so we claimed a bench afterwards.

    Stonebath

This room was by far my favourite. Giving off strong steam punk vibes, it was centred around a large furnace and water tank. Every fifteen minutes or so, an iron bucket of stones heated to 400°C is automatically cranked out of the furnace and dunked with a great hiss of steam into the water. It comes out and is let to steam dramatically into the room.

On the ceiling was a wooden fan that could be hand-cranked with a wall-mounted lever. Two fellow guests kept using it, thinking it would cool them down but their efforts were in vein. The strain of using it, combined with the fact it actually increased the heat around the room left them befuddled and sweaty.

I just loved the mechanical nature (even if the noise did shock me the first time) and seeing the steam made. It was a strange mix of industrial and primal.

    Snowstorm Experience

“Be brave”, I thought. I was nice and toasty from the previous room and so a little snow shower would be lovely and refreshing, right? Turns out, I really am just a total wimp when it comes to the cold. I hit the button and went to stand under the snow generator but I lasted all of five seconds before tiptoeing away with my tail between my legs. I made straight for the foot spa to warm up my chilly tootsies.

Mr Fluskey fared much better and took around 10 seconds of snow storm before deciding to find the next warm room which was…

    The Alpine Sauna

When you picture a sauna, this is it. In fact, you will have to picture it as I was too scared to take my phone into the heat. Warm wood lined the walls and made the raised seating benches. Guests lazily lolled across the slats, faces gently perspiring in happy worship of the Scandi gods. The Swiss pine wood permeates the air, transporting us to a small hut in an Alpine forest.

    Shower Walk and Bucket Shower

After getting sweaty in the sauna, we hit the shower room. I didn’t entirely read the sign so went in slightly unprepared. There are four different shower experiences which come along with sound effects and lighting. I loved the tropical rain shower complete with a distant roll of thunder but got a little shivery in the alpine mist forest. Of course, it was only Mr Fluskey that took on the cold bucket shower but even he gave quite a yelp.

    Steam Bath

This is the absolute classic steam room. Super hot with 100% humidity and kryptonite for mobile phones (so there are no photos again). We weren’t in here that long as for some reason, we weren’t enjoying the heat. It may have been the wine…?

    Salt Inhalation Room

We completed our turn around the thermo rooms with the chillout area dominated by a large salt wall. Projected onto the salt was a colour changing light which we had seen scrolling through the rainbow earlier on our tour. We took our seats and sat mesmerised, trying to see the colour shift. 10 minutes later, I realised we had forgotten to hit the button on the way in and so I had been staring at the same shade of blue convincing ourselves it was changing reeeeeeeeally slowly.

We ended the day, sitting on a bubbly bench in the pool, sipping on a cocktail.

    Elsewhere in the Spa

We hadn’t booked in for any treatments, but Jerry was kind enough to show us upstairs. There was a cool vitamin D room. The walls were decorated to look like a lovely English seafront but you are likely to get a lot more vitamin D in here than you are on your typical UK seaside break.

I loved the quick glimpse into the private hammam room, used for couples treatments. It was very pretty. We also saw the relaxation area and beauty rooms. I looked at my poor nails and regretted not getting a mani.

    The Changing Rooms

The changing rooms were reminiscent of a fancy gym. Each locker, closed using a code that you can set, was equipped with a towel, bathrobe and flip-flops.

It wasn’t busy when we originally entered the spa, but as all the guests left at once at 6 pm, it was pretty busy afterwards. Several groups of ladies went to their lockers to retrieve their shower bits, so I jumped into a shower cubicle straight away. I was quite disappointed to see that there was no conditioner. Discussions between adjacent showers highlighted that other guests were equally dismayed by this.

I happily threw my swimming costume into the electric wringer and then dried myself in one of the two private changing rooms. It definitely paid to be first in the shower. I did a rough dry of my hair as I had read that there were straighteners available. However, I couldn’t find any and my hair was a bit dry and frizzy due to the lack of conditioner. I ended up washing my hair again in our room later.

Final Thoughts on Our Spa at Ye Olde Bell Experience

But for a little squeeze of conditioner, this was the perfect spa break. The variety of rooms kept us entertained and melted our muscles to a happy jelly. We loved that guests could be totally virtuous, choosing the detox teas, or enjoy the excellently decadent food and drink. It would be an ideal spot for a catch up with a loved one, be it your mum, your other half or a best friend!

Tranquility Spa at The Club Barbados – A Review

How can you make a relaxing stay at a relaxing resort even more relaxing? On a recent trip to Barbados, that challenge was taken up by the friendly and talented staff of The Tranquility Spa at The Club Barbados. This is a full run down (or is that rub down) of the experience.

We were hosted by The Club Barbados but all opinions are entirely our own.

    The Tranquility Spa

Tucked at the back of the resort, towards the road that runs up Barbados’ west coast, the spa doesn’t make a song and dance of itself. It lines a driveway that snakes around to the guest car park, but the unassuming building is a different world inside.

Check out our full review of The Club Barbados.

Our Arrival at The Tranquility Spa

Before we could indulge in our full-body couples massage, there was a little admin time be done. The receptionist signed us in and gave us a couple of waiver forms. This was all pretty standard and thankfully we didn’t have any conditions that stopped us from enjoying a treatment.

How NOT To Prepare for Your Treatment

We had JUST stepped off the boat from our turtle tour, during which, we got horribly sunburnt. (read about the turtle tour here). The rain had been constant for almost two days and so when the sun did finally make an appearance, we just didn’t quite believe it would last. Despite slathering one factor 50, we had left it too late and paid for our carelessness with ruby red skin that was agony the next day!

A GoPro selfie with two soggy fluskeys clutching champagne on the boat.
    Getting pink

    But back to the spa…

How You SHOULD Prepare For Your Treatment

The receptionist showed us through to the sizeable changing rooms. We asked how undressed we should get, and her reply made me giggle like a schoolgirl.”To your comfort level”.

I couldn’t help but wonder if anyone had gone in for their massage fully clothed.

Mr Fluskey head for the male changing room and I had a wander around the women’s in my provided bathrobe and slippers.

There was a small sauna and steam room in the corner but with the heat and humidity outside, I didn’t feel the need to jump in.

After a few mirror selfies (because…robe) I realised just how red I was becoming. The heat began to rise from my shoulders and I began to wonder just how stupid we had been.

I padded outside to meet Mr Fluskey and our host looking a bit sheepish, and increasingly pink.

    The Relaxation Zone

Just up the stairs, a pleasantly air-conditioned area with relaxing spa music, and flavoured water awaited us. There were day beds by the wall and we lounged here for a couple of minutes as they prepped the treatment room.

    The Room

Yet more spa music drifted through the darkened space along with the distinctive aroma of calming essential oils. Two beds lay parallel to each other, covered in white sheets and towels. We were asked to disrobe and lie down with the towels covering our bodies.

I always find it slightly disconcerting when I hear Mr Fluskey’s spa therapist saying the same thing as mine at slightly different times. This really isn’t the space to feel competitive, is it?

    The Massage

Our massages began, and it was exactly what I had hoped for. The Swedish massage, with enough pressure to relieve tension, but not enough to leave you sore, was perfect.

The therapists were both very calming and had a good sense of humour. I always struggle to be entirely serious in these situations. It might be something to do with the fact I am in my undies. Thankfully, they took every stupid joke with a gentle chuckle but were very professional with it.

    The Afterglow

The massage left is very blissed out, so much so that I didn’t realise just how much pain I was in. We guzzled some nice, cold water before going back to the dressing rooms. It was as I peeled the dressing gown from my shoulders that the heat and pain of the sunburn really began to assert itself. I slathered myself in moisturiser and carefully put my clothes back on over my tender epidermis.

    Information

If you are thinking of indulging in some spa time, here is some information you might like to know:

Final Thoughts on Our Treatment at Tranquillity Spa

I am still conflicted about the massage. It was so lovely and I thoroughly enjoyed it, but it probably didn’t help the sunburn at all. Overall, I think it was worth it but I need to ensure I am not such an idiot again!

If however, you are not roasted by the Caribbean sun, we can highly recommend treating yourself to some spa time here. The therapists were kind, funny and very professional. The space was a world away from the road outside, and they did everything possible to make us as comfortable as we cud be. We came out relaxed, refreshed and…red.

  • Indulge Spa at Galley Bay Resort and Spa, Antigua – A Review

Indulge Spa at Galley Bay Resort and Spa, Antigua – A Review

Galley Bay Resort and Spa is a five star property on Antigua’s west coast. The whole place is dedicated to relaxation and rejuvenation but the absolute best place on the resort to be utterly spoilt is the Indulge Spa. Here you will find all kinds of treatment to pamper you from head to toe. We were lucky enough to enjoy some time here during our stay at Galley Bay and we wanted to share it with you.

Check out our full review of Galley Bay Resort. (I realised that I really wanted to write so much more about Indulge Spa, hence it has its very own post).

    The Welcome

As you approach the reception of Indulge Spa, you might think that it is a tiny facility. But as you sit to fill out paper work, you get a glimpse through to the world behind. A few steps in, a mini jungle resort opens up in front of you. Little round huts and tree houses surrounded by foliage, a relaxation deck and even a plunge pool. Lush greenery rustles with occasional ocean breezes, and it is incredibly tranquil.

    The Indulge Spa Menu

I always find it slightly overwhelming when I first look at a spa menu. The first things to discount are the treatments I had just before setting out (having my nails done for example). The next decision is whether to go for your face or body. Facials usually result in breakouts for me and so the choice was narrowed to my body. There were so many options; wraps, massages, polishes and a whole host of ointments to be rubbed all over us. I was particularly pleased to see two unusual offerings. The first was an after bite treatment for the poor people like me who are mosquito bait, and the second a soothing after sun concoction for people like me who burn easily. It’s like they knew I was coming!

    The Treatment

    Our Choice

We chose the Tropical Retreat. The menu told us that we were in for a “…two-step treatment [that] unites the tropical extracts of Mango and Passion Fruit and infuses them with the repairing power of Vitamin C.” After several painful massages over the years, it was a quick decision to go for something a little different. Neither Mr Fluskey or I had ever tried a wrap and tropical yogurt just sounded so good! We were shown into one of the small rooms. It had a “Flintstones spa in Bedrock” vibe.

    The Scrub

Changing into our disposable knickers, we self-consciously clambered onto the cling film covered tables. The embarrassment quickly evaporated as we made chit chat with our two spa therapists who were an absolute delight. They were funny and put us completely at ease as they began to exfoliate us. The scrub was intensely fruity, mango and passion fruit aromas filled the space (anyone fancy a pornstar martini right about now?). We were given a thorough rub down and as ever, I was horrified at the layers of dead skin that came off me. My skin was left feeling glowing and pink. It was a joy when the next stage came.

    The Wrap

A warm substance was slowly applied to our skin. This was the warm yogurt and tropical fruit mixture and it smelled divine. If the idea of eating warm yogurt wasn’t so off-putting then I may have tried just a tiny bit. When we were completely covered and hilariously slippery they wrapped us up. I felt like a doggy bag of leftovers…in a good way. First came layers of plastic like cling film, followed by tin foil. The final layer, cotton sheets, swaddled us like Egyptian mummies. The two ladies then turned down the lights and left the room. It was so warm, and so comfortable, that I was asleep in two minutes. You could have left me there for the rest of the holiday and aside from the yogurt curdling, I’d have been the happiest person on the resort.

The therapists came back into the room after about 15 minutes to peel us out of our cocoons. I slid off the bed and into the waiting robe feeling a little guilty about the Petit Filous trail that I was leaving. We waddled, giggling, over to the bathroom to rinse off.

    There’s More?

We thought it was all done and stood drying off and marvelling at our tropical scent. A discrete knock came on the door and we were led back into the room for even more pampering. We had a ten minute moisturising massage which was just bliss. We felt, and smelt delicious!

    Enjoying Indulge Spa

Feeling completely supple and relaxed we slid back into our clothes. I was really craving some sort of huge tropical fruit salad so imagine my joy when we were both handed a mango and passion fruit smoothie. I took to a sun lounger to enjoy some serious relaxation. Our skin was so soft and the sweet, sharp flavours were so reviving, I got the feeling of total body rejuvenation.

Our treatment was meant to take an hour but I think we lay around, lazily slurping on our smoothies for another forty minutes or so before accepting that we should head back out into the rest of the resort for….well, for even more relaxation.

    Take a quick look around.

    Final Thoughts

Both Mr Fluskey and I adored our time at the Indulge Spa. It is such a lovely setting, the staff were brilliant and our treatment was one of the best I’ve ever had (I am definitely a wrap convert now). If you are staying at Galley Bay Resort, or are staying anywhere in Antigua in fact, Indulge Spa is totally worth a visit. You never know, they may let you enjoy some of the other facilities around the resort as well.

We were hosted by Galley Bay Resort and the Indulge Spa but we genuinely had the most wonderful time and all opinions are my own. Honestly, go there and get wrapped in yogurt, it’s weird but you’ll love it!
